Being one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is counted among the most famous Hindu Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple stands on the western bank of Holy River Ganga. The main deity is known as Vishwanath or Vishweshvar (The lord of the universe). Legend has that Kashi (or Varanasi) is the dearest city of Lord Shiva and this adds so much more importance to this holy temple.
The temple has been destroyed and reconstructed a number of times in history. It is now managed by the state government.
