Fatehpur Sikri was founded by Akbar in 1571. It served as the capital of Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585 under the reign of Akbar. The location gets its name from the village called Sikri that occupied the place before.
Akbar also built a religious compound to commemorate the Sheikh, who had predicted the birth of his son Jehangir. Jehangir was born here in Sikri in 1569, after which the walled city and imperial palace were started to build.
