ABOUTAn uphill walk of around half a kilometer gets you to the monastery, which is one of the largest in Sikkim. The monastery belongs to the Karma Kargyu sect. It was built by the 16th Karmapa, who came from Tibet after Chinese invasion. Ugen Thinley, who is believed to be the next incarnation of Karmapa still lives at the monastery.
ENJOYThe architecture of Rumtek Monastery is among the finest in the world and closely resembles the one in Tsurphu in Tibet. Enjoy the panoramic view of the Gangtok town on the opposite hill. At the backside of the monastery is the Nalanda Institute of Higher Buddhist Studies.
