ABOUT | After Mt Everest was conquered by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in 1953, there was a spike in keenness towards mountaineering. With the impetus provided by the then prime minister – Mr Jawaharlal Nehru, this institute was established in 1954 to promote mountaineering as an organized sport. Interestingly, Tenzing Norgay was the first director of the institute. |
ENJOY | HMI offers many adventure sports in various difficulty categories. There are even courses for mountaineering and trekking to become a professional. The Tenzing Memorial, Darjeeling Zoo & Bengal Natural History Museum are worth visiting as well. HMI Restaurant and Tea Parlor serves breakfast, lunch & snacks including Chinese specialties. |
