A History Born of Benevolence

Unlike other palaces built purely for power and luxury, the Umaid Bhawan Palace was commissioned with a noble purpose. Built between 1928 and 1943, the palace’s construction was initiated by Maharaja Umaid Singh to provide employment to thousands of local villagers suffering from a devastating three-year famine. This grand project served as a lifeline, embodying the Maharaja’s deep connection to his people. It holds the distinction of being the last grand royal palace built in India before the country’s independence. Even today, the palace remains a home to the Jodhpur royal family, with a separate wing reserved for their private residence. This unique aspect allows you to witness a piece of history that is still actively being lived.

Architectural Marvel: Indo-Deco Splendour

The palace is a dazzling architectural fusion, blending the grandeur of traditional Indian design with the sleek modernity of Western Art Deco style. The entire exterior is built with local golden-yellow Chittar sandstone, giving it a warm, majestic glow, especially at sunrise and sunset. Spread across 26 acres of lush gardens, it is recognized as one of the largest private residences in the world, featuring 347 rooms. Step inside to admire the exquisite use of Makrana marble (the same used in the Taj Mahal) and Burmese teak wood. Look up at the majestic, Renaissance-inspired central dome and marvel at the Art Deco features like dramatic staircases and intricate murals. A hidden gem is the luxurious Zodiac Pool, an indoor swimming pool that adds a layer of mystique to the palace.
