A Cluster of Five: History and Architecture

The Haveli complex was commissioned in 1805 AD by Guman Chand Patwa, a tremendously wealthy merchant who dealt in gold, silver, and rich brocade (hence the name “Mansion of the Brocade Merchants”). Guman Chand intended the five separate mansions for each of his five sons.

• Construction Timeline: It is famously noted that the construction of the first and largest haveli took nearly 55 years, demonstrating the incredible patience and skill of the artisans.
• Present Status: Today, parts of the complex are maintained as a museum by the Archaeological Survey of India, offering visitors a detailed look into the past.

Architectural Highlights

Patwon Ki Haveli is considered the best example of Jaisalmer’s residential architecture, known for its mix of Rajput and Mughal styles.

• Intricate Carvings: The entire exterior is covered in highly detailed carvings, depicting themes ranging from floral and animal motifs to scenes from daily life and mythology.
• Jharokhas (Balconies): The complex features over sixty beautifully carved jharokhas (balconies) that are a highlight of the design. These served a dual purpose: providing privacy for the women of the house and regulating airflow to keep the interior cool in the desert climate.
• Interiors: Inside, visitors can explore rooms adorned with original mirror work, vibrant frescoes, and finely painted ceilings, reflecting the family’s immense wealth
