History and Significance

12th Century	Initially built by Rawal Jaisal, the founder of Jaisalmer.	Served as a vital water conservation tank in the arid desert.
c. 1367 AD	Reconstructed and beautified by Maharawal Gadsi Singh.	The lake was significantly revamped and named after the ruler. It became the primary water source for the city.
Over Centuries	Temples, ghats, and chhatris (cenotaphs) were added.	Transformed the lake into a major religious and cultural hub.

Architectural Highlights

Tilon Ka Pole (The Entrance Gateway)

The most iconic structure at the lake is the exquisitely carved Tilon Ki Pol, an archway made of yellow sandstone that serves as the main entrance.
The Legend: It is said to have been built by a royal courtesan named Tilon in the late 19th century. To prevent the then-Maharawal from demolishing the gate (as he felt passing under it would be below his dignity), Tilon quickly consecrated it by installing a Lord Krishna Temple on top.
Design: Its intricate carvings and delicate balconies showcase the finest Rajasthani craftsmanship.

The periphery of the lake is dotted with smaller temples, shrines, and beautifully carved chhatris (cenotaphs) of the royal family. These structures, bathed in the morning or evening sun, create a breathtaking reflection on the calm waters, making the lake a photographer’s paradise.

• Boating: Hire a paddle or rowboat for a tranquil ride to see the temples and chhatris from the water.
• Sunrise & Sunset View: Witness the magical transformation as the golden sun casts a warm glow on the yellow sandstone structures of the lake and the distant Jaisalmer Fort.
• Bird Watching: During the winter months (Oct-Mar), the lake becomes a haven for migratory birds, including various species of ducks and cranes.
