Fateh Sagar Lake : The Serene Blue Jewel
Fateh Sagar Lake stands as a magnificent testament to Udaipur’s title as the “City of Lakes.” This beautiful, crescent-shaped artificial lake, set against the backdrop of the Aravalli Hills, is the second largest in the city and an essential part of its water network, offering a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational charm.
Fateh Sagar Lake is cherished by locals and tourists alike, not just as a picturesque backdrop but as a vibrant lifeline and a serene escape in the heart of Udaipur.
A Glimpse into History
The lake’s history is marked by reconstruction and royal benevolence. Originally constructed by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678 AD, the earthen dam was unfortunately washed away by floods a few centuries later. It was subsequently rebuilt in 1889 AD by Maharana Fateh Singh, who constructed a much stronger stone dam, the Connaught Bund (named to commemorate a visit by the Duke of Connaught). The lake was then named after the Maharana to honour his contribution, and it remains a vital source of drinking water for the city.
What To Do At Fateh Sagar Lake
The lake is a central hub for leisure and sightseeing, popular for its vibrant atmosphere, especially during sunset.
- Boating to the Islands: The most popular activity is taking a boat ride (motorboat or paddleboat) to explore the lake’s three small islands.
- Nehru Garden: The largest island, this public park features lush green gardens, a boat-shaped restaurant, and a popular spot for picnics and family outings.
- Udaipur Solar Observatory (USO): Located on the second island, the USO is considered one of the best solar observing sites in Asia, with its location on the water providing optimal atmospheric stability.
- Public Park with Water-Jet Fountain: The third, smaller island, features a well-maintained public park with a beautiful illuminated water-jet fountain.
- Sunset Views and Promenade: The lake is famous for its breathtaking sunsets as the sky’s colours reflect beautifully on the water. A well-paved road, Moti Magri Road, circles a part of the lake, perfect for a leisurely walk, cycling, or enjoying street food from the numerous stalls.
- Moti Magri (Pearl Hill): Overlooking the lake is this hill with the Maharana Pratap Memorial, featuring an impressive bronze statue of the warrior king and his loyal horse, Chetak. It offers a spectacular, panoramic view of Fateh Sagar Lake and the city.
- Neemach Mata Temple: Situated atop a hill nearby, this temple provides a spiritual detour and further stunning vistas of the lake and its surroundings.
