City Palace: A Royal Panorama of Mewar
Majestically overlooking the serene waters of Lake Pichola, the City Palace of Udaipur is the grandest royal complex in Rajasthan. Built over a span of nearly 400 years by successive Maharanas of the Mewar dynasty, this colossal structure is a stunning showcase of Rajput military architecture blended with Mughal, European, and Chinese influences.
History & Significance
The palace is not just a single building but a cohesive complex of 11 smaller palaces, courtyards, and gardens, all built to a homogenous design. The construction was initiated by Maharana Udai Singh II in 1559 AD. He founded the city of Udaipur as the new capital of Mewar after the fall of Chittorgarh. Perched atop a hill on the eastern bank of Lake Pichola, the palace was strategically designed to offer a panoramic view of the surrounding city and a natural defense against invaders. For centuries, the palace served as the administrative, religious, and residential headquarters of the Maharanas, making it the most historically significant landmark in the region.
