Bagore Ki Haveli: A Glimpse into Royal Mewar Culture
Bagore Ki Haveli is an opulent 18th-century mansion nestled right on the waterfront of the picturesque Lake Pichola, at Gangaur Ghat in Udaipur. Originally built by Amar Chand Badwa, the then Prime Minister of the Mewar Kingdom, this sprawling palace is now a magnificent museum and cultural center. Restored by the West Zone Cultural Centre, the haveli offers a captivating look into the aristocratic lifestyle and rich cultural heritage of Mewar.
Architectural Splendor & Museum Highlights
The Haveli’s architecture is a fine example of Mewar style, boasting 138 rooms, numerous courtyards, balconies (jharokhas), and decorative archways. The interiors are renowned for their stunning glass and mirror mosaics, particularly in the royal chambers. Queen’s Chamber is a highlight featuring fine Mewar-style frescoes and two exquisite peacocks crafted from coloured glass mosaic. Explore dedicated galleries in the museum sections.
Cultural Evening: The Dharohar Dance Show
The Haveli is most famous for its evening cultural show, “Dharohar”, held daily in the Neem Chowk courtyard. This vibrant hour-long performance is an authentic showcase of Rajasthan’s traditional folk dances and music, including:
- Ghoomar: The iconic royal folk dance.
- Bhavai: The challenging pot-balancing dance.
- Chari Dance: Performed with lit brass pots on the head.
- A traditional Rajasthani Puppet Show.
