A Palace in the Clouds, Wrapped in Royal Mystery
Perched atop the mighty ramparts of Kumbhalgarh Fort, Badal Mahal—literally “Palace of Clouds”—offers a breathtaking blend of Rajput architecture, royal legacy, and panoramic views. This two-story palace, believed to be built in the 19th century, served as the royal residence for the rulers of Mewar and stands as a testament to their refined taste and strategic foresight.
Architectural Highlight
Badal Mahal is divided into two interconnected sections: the Zanana Mahal (women’s quarters) and the Mardana Mahal (men’s quarters). Both wings feature:
- Intricate jharokhas (balconies) with latticework for privacy and ventilation
- Vibrant murals in turquoise, green, and ochre hues—rare for Rajput interiors
- Stone-carved pillars, arched windows, and airy chambers designed to catch the breeze
