A Tribute in White Marble
Commissioned in 1899 by Maharaja Sardar Singh in honour of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II (the 33rd ruler of Jodhpur), Jaswant Thada was completed in 1906. Built entirely from finely carved and polished Makrana marble (the same marble used for the Taj Mahal), the structure is renowned for its ethereal quality. The marble sheets are so thin and delicately polished that they appear almost translucent, emitting a warm, soft glow when kissed by the sunlight.
Jaswant Thada is a splendid example of Rajputana architecture, blending Hindu temple-style elements with Mughal influences.
- Intricate Carvings: The entire cenotaph is adorned with exquisite filigree work and detailed carvings, especially the delicate ‘jali’ (lattice work) screens that allow the light and air to filter through, creating mesmerising patterns of light and shadow inside.
- Temple-like Structure: The main cenotaph resembles a miniature temple, featuring a central dome and four graceful corner domes.
- Royal Cenotaphs: The main building is dedicated to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and the complex also serves as the royal cremation ground, housing several other cenotaphs (Chhatris) for other members of the Marwar royal family.
