Desert National Park

Location: Jaisalmer

Discover the Majesty of the Thar

Welcome to the Desert National Park (DNP), one of India’s largest and most unique national parks, located in the golden sands of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Spanning over 3,162 sq. km, DNP is an unparalleled example of the Thar Desert’s fragile and surprisingly diverse ecosystem.
Far from being a barren wasteland, the park is a captivating landscape of rolling sand dunes (covering about 44% of the area), rocky terrains, compact salt lake bottoms, and vast, open grasslands. It is a testament to the resilience of nature, hosting a rich variety of flora and fauna specially adapted to the extreme arid climate.

Key Highlights & Ecosystem
  • Landscape: A striking blend of major landforms including massive, shifting sand dunes, craggy rocks, and fossil-bearing beds.
  • Geological Treasure: The park holds significant geological value, with a collection of fossils of animals and plants dating back up to 180 million years, including some from the Jurassic Period.
  • The Golden City Gateway: Located near the historic “Golden City” of Jaisalmer, making it easily accessible for tourists.
  • The Critically Endangered Star: DNP is the primary habitat and most important site for the long-term survival of the Great Indian Bustard (GIB), a critically endangered and one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.
