Bada Bagh

Location: Jaisalmer
A Royal Legacy in the Golden Desert

Bada Bagh, meaning “Big Garden,” is a hauntingly beautiful and historically significant complex located just 6 kilometers north of Jaisalmer. It serves as the majestic necropolis for the deceased Maharawals (rulers) of the Jaisalmer state, belonging to the Bhatti dynasty. This serene site offers a poignant glimpse into the rich royal heritage of Rajasthan, set against the dramatic, stark backdrop of the Thar Desert.

The Monument: Cenotaphs of the Golden Age

The primary feature of Bada Bagh is its extensive collection of royal cenotaphs (known locally as chhatris). These unique dome-shaped pavilions are crafted entirely from Jaisalmer’s signature yellow sandstone.

  • Architectural Marvel: Built across several centuries, beginning in the 16th century, the chhatris display exquisite craftsmanship. They feature intricate carvings, detailed pillars, and a blend of traditional Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. The size and complexity of each cenotaph often reflect the stature and power of the ruler it commemorates.
  • The Origin of the Name: Despite the arid surroundings today, the name “Big Garden” refers to the original purpose of the site. It was established around a massive dam and water tank (Jait Bandh and Jait Sar) commissioned by Maharawal Jait Singh II, which successfully created a green oasis in the desert, symbolizing the prosperity and foresight of the ruler.
  • Historical Significance: Walking among the row of cenotaphs is a journey through Jaisalmer’s history, as each monument is a stone-carved tribute to a specific ruler and their family, chronicling the lineage of the Golden City.
