Perched majestically atop the Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles) in the Aravalli Range, Jaigarh Fort stands as a formidable symbol of the martial prowess and architectural genius of the Kachawaha rulers of Amber. Commissioned in 1726 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the fort was built not for lavish living, but as a strategic military stronghold to guard and supply the nearby Amber Fort and the capital city of Jaipur. Unconquered throughout its history, it is rightfully known as the “Fort of Victory” (Jai meaning triumph, garh meaning fort).

1. The Mighty Jaivana Cannon: World’s Largest on Wheels

The crowning glory of Jaigarh is the colossal Jaivana Cannon, a marvel of 18th-century metallurgy and engineering. Cast right here in the fort’s own foundry in 1720, it was, at the time, the world’s largest cannon on wheels. Weighing approximately 50 tons with a 20-foot long barrel, the Jaivana was a devastating display of Rajput power, though legend has it that it was only test-fired once.

2. Masterpiece of Military Architecture

Unlike the ornamental Amer Fort below it, Jaigarh is a study in practical, rugged military design. Its thick, red sandstone walls stretch for over 3 kilometers, fortified by numerous watchtowers and bastions. Explore the fort’s ingenious internal systems, including:

  • Armory Chamber: A museum showcasing an impressive collection of ancient weapons, including swords, shields, and muskets.
  • Water Harvesting System: A sophisticated network of canals and massive underground water tanks that ensured the fort could withstand long sieges.

3. Royal Quarters and Passages

Wander through the stately, yet practical, palatial sections within the complex, such as the Laxmi Vilas, Lalit Mandir, and Vilas Mandir. The fort is also connected to the Amber Fort by subterranean passages, designed for the safe and secret passage of the royal family during times of crisis.
