Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal: A vision in Pink Standstone

Welcome to the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), Jaipur’s most distinctive and widely recognised landmark. This magnificent five-story palace is not merely a building, but a spectacular high screen wall, a testament to the artistic genius and royal customs of the Rajput era. Its honeycomb facade, built from red and pink sandstone, perfectly complements Jaipur’s nickname, “The Pink City.”

Architectural Marvel

The Hawa Mahal is celebrated worldwide for its unique design, a stunning fusion of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles.

  • The Facade (Screen): The iconic front of the palace is an elaborate, five-storey screen that resembles the crown of the Hindu God, Lord Krishna.
  • The Jharokhas: It boasts 953 small windows or jharokhas, each adorned with intricate latticework (jali).
  • Purpose of Design: The primary reason for this delicate, screened design was to allow the royal women (purdah system) to observe the lively street processions and daily life of the city below without being seen themselves.
  • The “Palace of Winds”: The numerous windows facilitate the Venturi effect, allowing cool air to circulate through the structure, keeping the interiors comfortable even during the intense Rajasthan summers—earning it the name Hawa Mahal.
  • World Record: The palace is considered the tallest building in the world built without a conventional foundation, relying instead on its unique curved and pyramidal shape for stability.
