Amer Fort

The Crown Jewel of Jaipur

Perched majestically atop a hill overlooking the serene Maota Lake, Amer Fort (often called Amber Fort) is an awe-inspiring testament to the opulent past of the Kachwaha Rajputs. Built with pale yellow and pink sandstone, and white marble, this sprawling palace-fortress is more than just a historical site—it is a journey into the heart of Rajasthan’s royal heritage. A magnificent blend of Hindu and Mughal architecture, Amer Fort was the original capital of the princely state of Jaipur before the city of Jaipur was established.

Architectural Style & Legacy
  • The current magnificent fort and palace complex was primarily commissioned by Raja Man Singh I (a trusted general of the Mughal Emperor Akbar) in 1592 AD.
  • The fort underwent significant expansion and renovation under his descendant, Mirza Raja Jai Singh I (ruled 1621–1667 AD). Many of the famous structures, such as the Diwan-i-Khas and the Ganesh Pol, were built or enhanced during his reign.
  • Successive rulers of the Kachwaha dynasty continued to make additions and improvements over the next 150 years.
  • The fort is a striking example of the blending of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, reflecting the close alliance the Kachwaha rulers had with the Mughal Empire, particularly during the reigns of Akbar and Jahangir.
  • Today, Amer Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as part of the group of Hill Forts of Rajasthan, and remains a stunning example of the power and artistry of the Rajput era.
